Matthew Bergstedt, MD, practices internal medicine at Ochsner Health. Dr. Matthew Bergstedt received his medical degree from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans in 2010. He went on to complete his internship and residency at Ochsner. Dr. Matthew Bergstedt is board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and has been on staff at Ochsner since 2013 as a hospitalist at Ochsner Medical Center - New Orleans until 2023. During that time he helped redesign the hospital's model for evening and night physician coverage as well as the admissions process to benefit both patients and physicians. As Ochsner grew into a regional hospital network a need arose for a physician to manage transfers to improve efficiency and safety, so Dr. Bergstedt also helped pilot the PILOT (Physician In Lead of Transfers) role at Ochsner's Regional Referral Center. He has a special clinical interest in Sickle Cell Disorders and formed a multidisciplinary task force to improve care delivery to these patients through challenging biases which had been hindering good patient care. He helped implement an early intervention system to better manage painful crises before they became severe and warranted hospitalization, with a significant reduction in emergency department utilization. He joined Ochsner 65+ in 2023 to focus on value-based primary care, which seeks to reduce costs of care through proactive intervention based on each patient's individual needs to maximize the best health outcomes and intends on this work to transform healthcare delivery and economics for the betterment of all. He is piloting value-based primary care in the community health setting in New Orleans East at the Brees Family clinic for vulnerable seniors and Sickle Cell patients. Other clinical interests include combating healthcare access inequity, perioperative consultative medicine and palliative care. He is a passionate educator, and he delights in having a small hand in shaping the future of medicine through teaching residents, interns and medical students.
