Dr. Matthew McQueen is a board-certified family physician with fellowship training and Certificate of Additional Qualification (CAQ) in primary care sports medicine. His practice location is the Ochsner Center for Primary Care and Wellness, 1401 Jefferson Highway, New Orleans. He has been a staff physician at Ochsner since 1997.
Dr. McQueen earned an A.B. degree from Duke University in Chemistry and German in 1984, then a M.D. degree at the University of Tennessee, Memphis in 1988. After two years of general surgical training, he transitioned to the Navy, attended the Naval Aviation Medicine Institute in Pensacola, and served an active duty tour as a Navy Flight Surgeon abroad.
He completed the Ochsner Family Practice residency in New Orleans in 1996 and the Hughston Clinic sports medicine fellowship in Columbus, Georgia in 1997.
Dr. McQueen remained in the Navy Reserve and retired as a Captain after 29 years of active and reserve service to the United States in 2018. His Navy tenure included a command tour as Commanding Officer of the reserve component of Naval Hospital, Bremerton, WA, 2014-2016. He is a graduate of the U. S. Naval War College and earned a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies in 2011.
Dr. McQueen was the team physician for the New Orleans Hornets (now Pelicans) between 2004 and 2015 and is still a consultant. He has been affiliated with several local high schools, sports organizations, and colleges. Dr. McQueen was a volunteer physician at the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympics.
Dr. McQueen has a lifelong interest in soccer as a player and youth coach. He earned United States Soccer Federation (USSF) National "C" and National "Youth" level licenses and previously coached young athletes of Lafreniere Soccer Club (now known as Louisiana Chicago Fire Juniors). He is a firm believer in exercise as disease prevention and maintains an active life through cycling and Master’s swimming, having retired from amateur soccer due to injuries in 2009.
