Dr. Matthew Rice received his medical degree from the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport in 2007. He went on to complete his internship and residency in internal medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans. Following residency, he was invited to serve an additional year as a chief medical resident with the department of medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine. He continued with Tulane to complete his fellowship in gastroenterology. Dr. Rice joined Ochsner Health System as a staff physician following completion of his fellowship. While practicing at Ochsner, he received advanced training in device-assisted deep enteroscopy.

Dr. Rice is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Gastroenterology and has been on staff at Ochsner since 2014. Dr. Rice is a general gastroenterologist who performs a variety of procedures including esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), colonoscopy, wireless capsule endoscopy, device-assisted endoscopy, high-resolution esophageal manometry, and esophageal pH studies. He has a special clinical interest in small bowel bleeding and obscure gastrointestinal bleeding that includes a focus on small bowel endoscopy and deep enteroscopy. He has special training in the use of single-balloon and double-balloon enteroscopes. He also has a special clinical interest in performing colonoscopies for patients with a history of incomplete, difficult, or challenging colonoscopy.
