Dr. Michael Sawyer received his master’s degree in community counseling from Minnesota State University Moorhead and his Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Memphis. He worked as a psychologist in university counseling centers while receiving his post-doctoral master’s degree in clinical psychopharmacology from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

Dr. Sawyer became licensed as a medical psychologist and started working from a dual psychotherapy/medication management model. He previously worked at Tulane University as a medical psychologist before joining Ochsner.

Dr. Sawyer considers himself a generalist, treating a variety of mental health issues, but specializes in LGBTQ+ issues, young adults, and multicultural competency. He keeps busy raising two young daughters and enjoys running, reading, and traveling.
