Shamita Shah has been the medical director for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) at Ochsner Health System since 2015. She is board-certified in gastroenterology and engages in cutting edge research with a special interest in primary sclerosing cholangitis and IBD, IBD-related cancer, novel diagnostics and treatments and IBD population health management. She had previously spent 7 years in the San Francisco Bay area where she directed the IBD program at Stanford University. She has repeatedly won Top Doctor awards in gastroenterology, as well as a Crohns & Colitis Foundation Champion of Hope award. Dr. Shah has been involved with 16 clinical trials and lectures extensively throughout the US. Her work has appeared in many peer-reviewed publications, including Scientific Reports, Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology, Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Southern Medical Journal, Digestive Diseases and Sciences, and many others. She has served as an ad hoc reviewer and/or on the editorial boards of NIH proposals for the Autoimmune Centers of Excellence, Inflammatory Bowel Disease Journal, Digestive Diseases and Science, American Journal of Gastroenterology, and Expert Review of Clinical Immunology. Dr. Shah received her medical degree from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, New Orleans. She was chief resident of internal medicine at Louisiana State, completed a gastroenterology/hepatology fellowship at Ochsner Health System, then did an advanced training program in inflammatory bowel disease at the University of Chicago. She is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterological Association, Crohns & Colitis Foundation of America, and Woman Educators Clinicians and Researchers in IBD.
