Syem K. Barakzai, MD, specializes in gynecologic oncology at Ochsner Health. Dr. Barakzai earned his medical degree from Tulane University and completed his residency at the University of Southern California. He completed a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is a member of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Recognized for clinical excellence, Dr. Barakzai has received multiple honors, including the 2023 Conquer Cancer Merit Award and the Society of Gynecologic Oncology Outstanding Resident Award in 2021.

Trained at a high-volume cancer center, Dr. Barakzai offers comprehensive gynecologic oncology care. His expertise spans minimally invasive and open surgical techniques, complex tumor debulking, pelvic exenteration, radical hysterectomy and advanced reconstructive procedures. He is also experienced in office-based diagnostics and procedures. Dr. Barakzai takes a patient-centered, multidisciplinary approach to care and sees patients at Ochsner Lafayette General.

Outside of medicine, he enjoys rugby, guitar and live music, and he practices Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Fluent in Spanish, German, Urdu, Hindi and English, Dr. Barakzai is originally from a small city in the United Kingdom and is passionate about serving community-based populations.
