Biography

Dr. Jose Tafur is an interventional cardiologist and program director for the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at Ochsner Medical Center - New Orleans. His professional interests center on structural heart disease interventions and medical education.

Dr. Tafur has served on the International Committee of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions and the Education Standards Committee of the American College of Cardiology. He is a fellow of both the ACC and SCAI. Since joining the faculty, he has been recognized with multiple honors, including Teacher of the Year, Mentor of the Year and Research Mentor of the Year awards. He has authored numerous manuscripts and book chapters, particularly in the fields of transcatheter aortic valve replacement and peripheral arterial disease.

Board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Tafur’s clinical expertise includes complex high-risk coronary interventions, transcatheter valve replacement and repair, peripheral arterial angioplasty and stenting, and percutaneous treatment of venous thromboembolism, among other advanced cardiovascular procedures.

A native of Cali, Colombia, Dr. Tafur earned his medical degree from Universidad del Valle. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Texas in Houston, followed by a fellowship in cardiovascular disease at Ochsner Medical Center. He pursued additional subspecialty training in interventional cardiology and structural heart disease at Ochsner before joining the faculty in 2017. He was appointed program director for the Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship in 2020 and advanced to program director for the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship in 2024.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Tafur enjoys spending time with his wife and four young children, as well as their two large dogs. He is passionate about biking, fishing, cooking and taking long road trips with his family.
