Milk Depot at Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center

What is the Milk Depot at Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center?

Many mothers who give birth prematurely are not able to breastfeed. A good alternative for these mothers and their babies is pasteurized donor human milk, which contains antibodies to fight disease and infection and can help lead to better outcomes for preterm babies.

The Milk Depot at Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center serves as a satellite storage facility for the Mothers’ Milk Bank of Louisiana at Ochsner Baptist - A Campus of Ochsner Medical Center. Accredited in 2018 by the Human Milk Banking Association of North America, the Mothers’ Milk Bank of Louisiana at Ochsner Baptist is the first and only facility in Louisiana to receive this accreditation.

The Milk Depot at Ochsner Lafayette General provides temporary safe storage of donated milk from approved donors, a generous gift to the families of fragile babies in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Donors who have been approved by the Mothers’ Milk Bank of Louisiana can drop off their frozen human milk at Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center. All donated milk will be sent to the Mothers’ Milk Bank of Louisiana at Ochsner Baptist, where it is processed and pasteurized. The pasteurized donor human milk is then sent to hospitals across Louisiana to help delicate newborns get healthy.

Before you can donate milk to the Milk Depot, you must go through the screening and approval process, which is coordinated by the Mothers’ Milk Bank of Louisiana at Ochsner Baptist. If you are already an approved donor, you may make donations at Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center.

If you are not yet an approved donor with the Mothers’ Milk Bank of Louisiana at Ochsner Baptist but wish to become one, please call 504-703-6455 or complete the online registration form. A member of the Mothers’ Milk Bank of Louisiana at Ochsner Baptist team will follow up with you and provide next steps:

Step 1: Complete a 10- to 15-minute phone screening after the milk bank receives your registration information via telephone or the online registration form.

Step 2: Complete and return all required information sent to you by one of our donor coordinators.

Step 3: Complete the blood test ordered by the milk bank team, at no cost to you. Please wait to receive instructions from the team before getting a blood test.

Step 4: Once your paperwork and lab results are received, a donor coordinator will call you with your approval status. After you are approved, you will receive a donor ID number.

The approval process can take up to four weeks, depending on how quickly you return your paperwork and when the milk bank receives the results of your lab work and health forms completed by your healthcare provider.
