The wait times displayed to the right reflect the approximate time to see a physician at each Ochsner ER. Shortly after arrival and registration, you will be evaluated by a nurse. If it is determined you have a condition that requires immediate attention, you will be placed in a room and evaluated by a physician. If you have a condition that does not warrant immediate attention, you will be seen as soon as possible and the estimated wait times will apply in most cases. The Ochsner Medical Center – West Bank ER offers an experienced emergency medicine team that can quickly and expertly respond to all types of serious injuries and illnesses. We're committed to making your emergency room experience as comfortable and convenient as possible by regularly checking in with you and your family about anticipated wait times. We also make sure that our patients have the necessary information to take home for follow-up care. The Emergency Department (ED) has two sections: the emergency side for serious illness and injury and the qTrack (formerly known as Fast Track) for urgent but less serious conditions. When you get to the ED a triage nurse will see you to determine which section is appropriate for your condition. For example, if you have chest pain you will be seen in Emergency. If you twist your ankle or have an ear ache you may be seen in qTrack. The qTrack area is open everyday of the week and can provide basic x-rays and exams.
In 2007, the department began using an electronic patient tracking system to better track patient wait times. Immediately upon a patient’s arrival they are logged into the system and wait times are tracked at each step in the care process. This allows our emergency team to better respond to a patient’s needs and to work towards more efficient patient processes. The ER includes:
- 17 beds
- qTrack area on Mondays from 9am-1am and Tuesday-Sunday from 10am-10pm for patients with less serious injuries. This area has an additional 6 rooms.
- All diagnostic services available 24/7
- TTY for hearing impaired

Monday, January 12, 2009 marked the opening of Ochsner Baptist Medical Center’s Emergency Room (ER) located at 2700 Napoleon Avenue in Uptown New Orleans. This additional $12 million investment also included expanding the Ochsner Baptist ICU from three to 12 beds and is in addition to the more than $20 million to re-open 22 medical/surgical beds in the Clara Wing. This addition brings the total bed count on campus to approximately 60 beds. Also, on campus are two endoscopy suites and a state-of-the-art Imaging Center. Emergency services have not been available on the Ochsner Baptist campus since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The 6,000-square-foot ER includes the following:
- Two trauma rooms
- Nine exam rooms
- One triage room
- Electronic medical records system
- Computerized patient tracking for fast door-to-doctor care and quicker treatment
Another advantage to the Ochsner Baptist ER is the on-campus, comprehensive Imaging Center. In an emergency situation, an X-ray, ultrasound, CT or MRI are crucial to proper care and diagnoses. Residents of Uptown, Downtown, New Orleans East, Gentilly, Chalmette, Mid City and Lakeview/Lakefront neighborhoods are expected to utilize the Ochsner Baptist ER. The return of emergency services to the Broadmoor community is a huge step in the recovery process and will provide quality emergency care that’s easily accessible to the local community. Ochsner purchased the Baptist campus in October 2006 from Tenet Healthcare. In such a short time, Ochsner Baptist has gone from a small surgical institution to a full-service facility capable of handling critical cases.

Through our partnership with TeamHealth Southeast, we offer a team of highly qualified Emergency Department providers who are dedicated to providing efficient, safe, and compassionate care. The patient to nurse ratio is kept low to ensure each patient receives the care they need. In 2008, Ochsner Medical Center - Baton Rouge Emergency Department Director Jon Michael Cuba, M.D. was named the TeamHealth Medical Director of the Year, an honor given to the director who most exceeds expectations while remaining strongly focused on customer care. Ochsner Medical Center – Baton Rouge is committed to reducing waiting times for all of our patients. To achieve this goal, we have taken the following steps:
- Increased the number of providers during peak times to facilitate patient visits.
- Implemented the “qTrack” system to create “virtual” beds to enable additional patient visits.
- Created a “Results Waiting Room” to enable patients to wait for test results in a separate area, away from the patient room, to create the capacity to provide care for additional patients.
- Improved inter-departmental processes to reduce the time required to receive test results.
The Emergency Department includes:
- 25 beds
- qTrack for patients with less serious injuries open daily 9 am-11 pm
- All diagnostic services available 24/7
- TTY for hearing impaired

The Emergency Room at Ochsner Medical Center - Kenner recently received a complete face-lift to its waiting room, treatment rooms, and service areas. With 14 treatment rooms and upgrades to the physical layout of the ER, patients now experience a decrease in the average wait time from arrival to physician evaluation.
The new layout and service upgrades also enhance the ability to deliver faster care to every patient. All patients receive a rapid assessment upon arrival, and depending on the severity of their initial assessment, a triage nurse will route them to an acute care bed where they are immediately evaluated by a physician or taken to a designated Q-track area. The Q-track was developed to see more patients in less time.
Additionally, there is a new test results area for patients seen in the Q-track who require further testing. This upgrade allows for the triage nurse to place new patients in evaluation, while others wait for results. The physician and nursing staff of OMC-K are trained to care for all patient cases, from infants to the elderly. The emergency department is completely computerized with the latest information technology systems and utilizes electronic patient tracking to provide the fastest and most efficient medical care possible.
The ER at Ochsner Kenner has also focused on increasing survival rates for sufferers of a heart attack. Through a coordinated effort between the ER staff, cardiologists and the cath lab, a new process has resulted in a more effective and streamlined process to achieve lower door to reperfusion times, thus improving the outcome and survival rates of patients experiencing a heart attack. The benchmark standard in reperfusion (or restoration of blood flow) during a heart attack is 90 minutes from arrival at the ER to the time the blocked artery is opened. The average time it takes at Ochsner Medical Center Kenner is now 60 minutes, which is well under the national average and the best in the New Orleans region according to AMI Core Measures.
In addition to reducing reperfusion times in heart attack patients, internal process changes have also directly resulted in increased patient satisfaction scores. The scores at OMC-Kenner's Emergency Department have increased each month in 2009 having started in the 47th percentile in January and steadily rising to the 99th percentile in May.
