  • Direct pediatric and adult patient care activities for autologous and allogenic stem cell transplants including matched-related, matched-unrelated, and haploidentical allogeneic stem cell transplants

• Ochsner was the first in Louisiana to provide CAR T-cell Therapy commercially to patients. The oncology service line offers several different CAR T-cell products to our patients.
• Provider Teams
  • Hematology Oncology/BMT: 6 physicians, 7 nurse practitioners (4 inpatient, 3 outpatient), 3 transplant coordinators, quality manager, and data manager
  • Medical Oncology: 16 physicians and 7 nurse practitioners/physician assistants
  • Gynecologic Oncology: 6 physicians
  • Pediatric Oncology: 3 physicians

• Forum
  • The resident(s) will alternate presenting weekly supportive care, drug class, or disease state discussions to enhance medication knowledge.
• Research
  • The resident(s) will be provided a list of research topics to choose from which they will develop a protocol, submit to the Institutional Review Board (IRB), collect data, present their research at a national meeting, and complete a publishable manuscript.
• Teaching and Education
  • The resident(s) will present a 60-minute formal continuing education (CE) presentation in the fall to the pharmacy department on an oncology-related topic of the resident’s choice
  • The resident(s) will present a 60-minute formal morbidity, mortality, and improvement (MM&I) presentation in the spring to the pharmacy department on an oncology-related pharmacy issue
  • The resident(s) will lead an oncology supportive care interactive-case learning activity with the pharmacy students at Xavier College of Pharmacy during the oncology section of the therapeutic course. The resident(s) will create exam questions associate with the topics taught.
  • The resident(s) will complete a brief newsletter quarterly is shared with clinical and infusion center pharmacists throughout the healthcare system. Submitted items include a summary of the resident’s journal club, drug information question write-up, and a safety corner update.
  • The resident(s) will submit two board-type questions based on the forum that resident presents that will be shared with the medical oncology fellows as part of their board question education series
• Drug Information
  • The resident(s) will serve as the Secretary for the System Oncology Subcommittee and provide minutes to pharmacy and oncology administration to report out at the System Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee.
  • The resident(s) will complete a monograph or class review and present the recommendations to the System Oncology Subcommittee and any other committee as needed
  • The resident(s) will participate in a policy development or process improvement project or review and present the recommendations to the System Oncology Subcommittee and any other committee as needed
  • The resident(s) will complete a brief quarterly newsletter that is shared with clinical and infusion center pharmacists throughout the healthcare system. Submitted items include a summary of the resident’s journal club, drug information question write-up, and a safety corner update.
  • The resident(s) will complete a medication utilization evaluation (MUE) and present the findings to the System Oncology Subcommittee and any other committee as needed
• Staffing
  • The resident(s) will staff every 3rd weekend for a total of 17 weekends throughout the residency year. The resident(s) will also staff 1 major and 1 minor Ochsner observed holiday.
  • During the staffing rotation, the resident will act as the oncology unit-based clinical pharmacist and provide coverage to other areas as assigned.

Eligibility

• Graduate of an accredited College/School of Pharmacy
• Eligible for licensure to practice pharmacy in the State of Louisiana
• Licensed in the State of Louisiana before the program begins or shortly thereafter
• Successful completion of a PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency
