Dr. Hines received his BS from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and obtained his MD from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University. He completed his training in general and cardiothoracic surgery at Wake Forest University North Carolina Baptist Hospital. He then completed fellowships in Extracorporeal Support (ECMO) and Congenital Heart Surgery at Boston Children’s Hospital before joining the faculty at Wake Forest. In 2011 he joined the faculty at the University of Texas at Houston, practicing at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital at Texas Medical Center. He moved to New Orleans to join Ochsner Health in December of 2017. He is Board Certified in Cardiothoracic Surgery and Congenital Heart Surgery.

Dr. Hines’ practice includes the correction of congenital heart defects in children and adults, including special expertise in minimally invasive techniques. He also has interest and experience in the repair of severe intrathoracic airway anomalies and complex chest wall reconstruction including pectus excavatum and carinatum. Dr. Hines is also a nationally recognized expert in the management of ECMO, a form of life support for children and adults with life threatening heart and/or lung failure.

In addition to numerous publications and book chapters on the topic, he has given invited lectures and taught ECMO courses all around the United States as well as in Europe, Asia, Central and South America, and served a decade on the Steering Committee of the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization, including two years as its Chair. He is currently the Medical Director for the ECMO Program at Ochsner.
