Ophthalmology Fellowship Programs

Why Ochsner Health?

Founded in 1942, Ochsner Health is the largest independent academic health system in the United States, and is an academic multispecialty practice. Ochsner Health has more than 4,500 employed and affiliated physicians; and offers more than 40 owned, affiliated, or managed hospitals. Our flagship hospital, Ochsner Medical Center, is a 767-bed acute-care hospital located in New Orleans, Louisiana. It has been ranked as the No. 1 hospital in Louisiana for 12 consecutive years and recognized as a “Best Hospital” for 2023-2024 by U.S. News & World Report.

Our medical school, the Ochsner Clinical School (in partnership with the University of Queensland in Australia), enrolls about 120 medical students each year. The Ochsner Eye Center and our fellowship programs are vital parts of this great care system. This program includes 30 full-time staff physicians with a diverse range of subspecialties, and it receives more than 68,000 patient visits each year. The Ochsner Eye Center has a diverse patient population, offering fellows the opportunity to see patients of all ages and backgrounds.

The fellowship program has offered training in the specialty of glaucoma since 1995 and in the specialty of retina and vitreous surgery since 1984. Both programs also boast continuous Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology (AUPO) approval status, as well as integrated Epic® electronic medical records (EMR).
